Brian Allan Best
It is with sad regret that I inform you that Brian passed away at The Canberra Hospital on
onTuesday 7th of July. He is now at peace and not suffering anymore from the cancer that
racked his body.
Brian was a cook on HMAS Ibis from 1970 to 1971 and the HMAS Snipe from 1971 to 1972.
Brian's funeral was held at Mt Thompson Crematorium in Brisbane on 17th of July.
I attended the Reunion and dedication in March 2006 in Canberra at the invitation of Brian, as
I lived in Canberra and had known Brian all of my life.

Sadly passed away 25th March 2010.
He was a member of the HMAS Ibis crew.

Jim CAREY ‘Crossed the Bar’.
Jim passed away on 15th February 2012. He had been ill with cancer Our condolences to Jims family.
Gordon “Stroppy” PROVE
January 2012 - Sadly we have to add another name to the roll of those who have left us and crossed the bar. Gordon “Stroppy” Prove who passed away September 5th ,2011 . We would like to extend our condolences to Stroppys family from the 16th Minesweeping squadron Family.
Captain Benjamin Dunn RAN on Friday 30th March 2012.
Along with his many postings Ben served XO of HMAS Vendetta on the Vietnam trip (69-70) and later became CO of Vendetta (76-78).
A funeral service was held on Thursday 12th April at the Norwood Park Crematorium in Canberra
Our sincerest sympathy and condolences to the family.
Albert MILES (Ozzy)
Mr Miles’ daughter sadly informed us he passed away 26/10/13 and he wanted the RSL & Minesweepers to be advised.

LIEUTENANT COMMANDER John (Ces) WILLIAMS RAN (Retd) Sadly passed away following a long battle with cancer.
We would like to extend our condolences to his family friends and colleagues for their sad loss.

Commodore Adrian Cummins,
RAN, AO (retd) 1937-2005
Adrian Cummins served 39 years in the RAN with service in most parts of the world, and was awarded a
British Admiralty Commendation for brave conduct whilst on exchange service with the Royal Navy in 1962.
He commanded the Minesweeper HMAS IBIS during Indonesian confrontation, the frigate HMAS Swan and the
guided missile destroyer HMAS Perth, as Senior Australian Officer in the Gulf of Oman in 1980/81. He spent 20
years working in Navy office and Defence Central in Canberra, as Director of Surface and Air Weapons,
Director Naval Manpower Planning (23,000 people), Project Director for an aircraft and missile range project
and as the Director General Defence Conditions of Service (130,000 people) and Director General Naval
Warfare. He was awarded the AM in 1977 and AO in 1989 for his work. Adrian joined the RAN as a 13 year old
Midshipman. Became a Gunnery Officer.
He was Captain of HMAS IBIS, Ton Class Minesweeper during The Indonesian Confrontation in Malaysia.
He went to Captain various other Australian Navy Ships to Pay Off as a Commodore.
He served his country with Distinction & Honour & will long be
remembered by those who served with him. He is succeeded by his wife Benedicte and daughters Julia &

With much sadness Allan's family announced he had passed away on 27th October 2006.
He was a tireless contributor to this site and a great friend.
He will be much missed, as will his work on behalf of the 16th.

Warrant Officer Underwater Weapons, Daniel Joseph ANDERSON, R933078
Born Marrickville NSW 11 08 44 but known as the "Manjimup Kid"
He grew up on the family Tobacco farm out of Manjimup,WA.
Joined the RAN in the first intake of JRs at HMAS Leeuwin in July 1960.
Paid off from Navy Office in 1981.
The list of his sea postings include but not limited to;
HMAShips; Yarra, Anzac,Ibis,Brisbane & Supply ('77-'78).
Ibis, during the Cronfrontation (second swing) and Brisbane, on the gun line in Vietnam.
Shore postings include but not limited to;
Leeuwin, Torrens (Encounter) and Creswell.
At Leeuwin he was the Coxswain the the SDB and the GPV.
At Torrens he associated with the Bass & Banks and at Creswell he was crew for the SAR vessel.
So even during his shore postings he spent a deal of time at sea.
After he paid off he worked in the International Oil and Gas Exploration Industry:
Japan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Denmark, Nigeria and the NW Shelf.
Danny and his wife Shirley had three children; Duane, Brenton and Simone and they lived in Safety Bay, WA. After he paid off.
Danny was actively involved with the Safety Bay Bowling Club and the Rockingham Naval Association.
In February 2002 Danny was diagnosis with a brain tumour and died on 13th February 2005, after a long and hard fought battle.
Bill joined Pussers in 1956 as a PO Shipwright, and was discharged in 1964 with the same Rank.
He moved back to Footscray and continued working in the building trade.
In more recent years after his retirement, he moved to Anglesea near Geelong Vic. He lived there until his
poor health took him to hospital in Oct 2008 where he was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.
Unfortunately the Cancer progressed and Bill passed away on Sat 7th Feb.2009.
He is survived by his wife, seven children and several grandchildren.
Bill was always very proud of his time spent on HMAS Hawk.

Keith ‘Gus’ MURRAY DSC, RAN
Sadly passed away on April 16th 2013, after a long battle with ill health. Gus was born in Newcastle in 1936 and at the age of 13 he entered into RAN College, Victoria, where he earned the nickname Gus that was to stay with him all his life, he passed out in 1954 and began his career as a cadet for a year in the RN on HMS Triumph. He then spent 3 more years in training before the young Lieutenant was given command of HMAS Teal for deployment in the Singapore Straits, during which two altercations took place when the Teal was involved in action for which Murray was awarded the DSC. He was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander in 1966 shortly before leaving the RAN to pursue a career in flight, working for the NSW Air Ambulance and going on to work for Quantas from which he retired in 1996.
Keith ‘Gus’ Murray leaves behind his wife Jill, daughters Penny and Anthea and son Angus.
A memorial service was held in May 2013 at Garden Island Chapel, Sydney.
Warrimoo, NSW - Able Seaman on Ibis passed away sometime late '05 we think from a heart attack
Paul Baldy LEHMAN from HMAS Ibis passed away i n November 2009.
Sincere condolences to the Lehman family.
ex ME R54929 passed away on 28th. January 2011. Mal had been fighting cancer for some time. He served on the HMAS Curlew.
Leslie John GRICE
Sadly passed away in 2012 our sincere condolences to Les’ family.
Veteran of the Indonesian Confrontation, ex AB(UW) George Allen, HMAS Curlew 1965/66 (both deployments) passed away at Northampton, W.A. on 28th April 2012, from kidney failure and emphysema, declared intestate. DVA first refused a request for funeral expenses but paid up on appeal.
Passed away on the 14/3/2013
Collie served on HMAS Gull from November 1965 to Aug 1966 after a battle with cancer.
We have news that sadly we have had to say goodbye to another Sweeper, Shorty Shewan. We send our condolences to Shorties family and friends.
Bruce ‘Buck’ RAYNOR
Ex HMAS Hawk crossed the bar 29th December 2013. Condolences from the 16th MSS family.
The late wife of Baldy Lehman passed away 4th October 2007 after a short illness. Vicky is survived by
Husband Baldy who served on Ibis 65/66 during Confrontation as a Stoker Then again as a Kellick Stoker in
the late 60s, their 2 Daughters Simone and Maree, their Partners and 9 Grand Children(5 girls & 4 Boys) she will be sadly missed.
Of HMAS Curlew has joined the Sweeper crew in the sky in 2006 after a distinguished career in the Royal
Australian Navy and achieving his commissioned Rank.

Crossing The Bar
Joy sadly passed away on 3 May 2011 and was buried on Friday 6 May 2011 at Caloundra.
Joy was the beloved wife of Robert "Bob" Barr.
